The structural characteristics and performance of burglarproof glass share many similarities with bulletproof glass. Generally, the primary goal of burglarproof glass is to prevent simple theft methods, such as cutting with a glass cutter or damage with simple tools, rather than continuous attacks with complex weapons. However, in high-security areas, burglarproof glass needs to possess higher resistance to attack, capable of withstanding continuous attacks from intruders using complex weapons for extended periods, and even, if necessary, withstand bullets.
Numerous tests have shown that, at the same nominal thickness, thin-layer multi-layer laminated glass offers better protection than thick-layer laminated glass; semi-tempered laminated glass is more effective than ordinary laminated glass and tempered laminated glass; furthermore, increasing the thickness of the interlayer also improves the protective effect.
Based on the materials used in the structural layers, burglarproof glass can be categorized into all-inorganic burglarproof glass, all-inorganic film-coated burglarproof glass, and organic/inorganic composite burglarproof glass, among others. Test data shows that using standard laminated glass with a nominal thickness of 6mm as security glass significantly improves resistance to single-pane hand tools (such as hammers and clubs). Furthermore, the design of laminated glass prevents it from being cut from one side, effectively reducing the effectiveness of silent glass cutters and other burglary tools. When using thicker, stronger multi-layered security glass, even sophisticated tools are unlikely to penetrate the interlayer for a relatively long time.
In fact, a simple "two-in-one" laminated glass with a total thickness of 7.14~14.28mm (interlayer thickness of 1.52~2.28mm or more) meets the US UL972 standard for security glass, effectively preventing common "break-and-grab" incidents. Criminals typically prefer to expend considerable effort to break the glass rather than risk prolonged damage to the PVB interlayer. This type of multi-layered glass, bonded to one or more layers of plastic sheets using PVB or PU and sealed at both ends with adhesive, effectively resists external temperature deformation and elongation damage. It boasts a tear strength of at least 30 kgf/cm² and an elongation at break of up to 500%, making it ideal for burglarproof and bulletproof applications.
Furthermore, bulletproof (burglarproof) glass can be equipped with an early warning system. This is achieved by incorporating metal mesh into the adhesive layer and embedding sensors and alarm devices for visible light, infrared, temperature, and pressure, providing comprehensive security. If a thief triggers the alarm device within the glass, or even activates a connected weapon or stun gas, rapid response measures can be taken to effectively protect personal safety and property.
